Compassionate Vegetarians, An Illustrated Journey (Paperback)
Synopsis: This book expressed the sentiments held by millions of people - people of wisdom and compassion - over countless generations, who have chosen to live without taking the lives of other beings, merely to sustain their own existences. Through simple aphorisms and gentle illustrations, it explains how these individuals have chosen a way of life, not merely a diet; how they have sought to live in peace with all beings with whom they share this planet; and how they recognize that only when humankind acts humane, caring, and justly toward all beings will there be peace on this planet. This book is their story.
It is Wesak Day in Malaysia today and it marks three momentous events in Buddha's life - his birthday, enlightenment and achievement of Nirvana. During Wesak, Buddhists celebrate the life of the Buddha and his teachings. They remember the night of his enlightenment and his insights into his previous lives, as well as his revelations about the nature of death, karma and rebirth, suffering and desire. The Bathing of the Buddha’ often takes place. Water is poured over the shoulders of statues of the Buddha as a reminder of the need to purify the heart and mind. Celebrations begin before dawn, when devotees throng the temples early in the morning to meditate and take the Five Precepts. Sutras are chanted by monks.Giving to others is an important part of Buddhist tradition. Gifts may be exchanged as part of the festivities on Wesak. There is also emphasis on giving to the needy. Many Buddhist temples serve vegetarian food. Location: No. 7, Jalan 5 Section 1, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.
A staff of this restaurant was standing at the entrance to encourage passers by to try out their food."If you are not satisfied, then you don't have to pay". That was the promise given by the owner. We then gave specific instructions for the chef to use as little oil and salt as possible. We were not disappointed as the food that came actually were not oily and salty at all. Both the dishes ordered were RM 7.00 each.

This Indian Vegetarian restaurant has got an award for cleanliness. It is really very clean and you can even observe all the activities in the kitchen through the glass panel dividing the dining area. The staffs are also friendly and courteous. However, I find the menu a bit pricey like the Hakka rice which was ordered, except for a few pieces of capsicum and some dried chillis, you cannot find any other ingredients with the fluffy rice. It comes with a small dish of onions in yoghurt. The vegetarian samosa with coconut chutney is hot and tasty and priced at RM4 for 3 pieces.
This more than 100 years old famous restaurant is located on the south side of the West Lake. It is not a vegetarian restaurant but nevertheless they still managed to get us some really nice and delicious vegetarian dishes. Heard that this is a very pricey restaurant but for the tasty food, courteous service and also very nice atmosphere, I strongly recommend that you give this restaurant a try. Kwangsin Vege Corner, Lot 11, Dataran Maybank, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.
Tucked away in a corner of the Foodcourt at Dataran Maybank, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur is a vegetarian stall run by a few buddhist nuns from a kuan yin temple in Jalan Genting Kelang. The food here is really tasty and healthy as they are less oily and salty. They are quite creative as well with the choice of ingredients used in the combination of individual dishes.
Stall No.11
Dishes being served for the day
Fried noodles with salted vege and vege roast pork
Rice with gingko nuts, vege curry and luffa
In this dish, the gingko was fried together with bamboo pith, luffa was together with shredded bean curd sheet which looks very much like scrambled eggs and the vege curry was the normal ones with potatoes, cabbage, brinjal and long beans. Barley was boiled with the sweetened melon strips so sugar need not be added. Total bill came to RM15 together with the barley drinks.

Had wanted to come back to Niche to try out the Assam Laksa. Quite disappointing as I find that the taste is just so so and it is a little too sweet. The loh mee is also rather plain. To me, MG Cafe, Desa Sri Hartamas still serve the best vegetarian assam laksa in town.

We woke up to a cloudless bright blue sky yesterday Sunday morning and decided that it was a perfect day to visit the beach after a long rainy and cloudy spell was cast over Melbourne the past week. St Kilda beach is a very nice beach easily assesible by both public transport and by car. It's only about 4 km from the Melbourne CBD, although it can take quite long to reach by Melbourne's trams (those things need to speed up!). We splurged some of my savings on some homemade olive oil soap and some essential oil fragrance before heading out to the pier for some cakes recommended by Tsan. It was indeed a great find!

Choc Meltdown and Choc Muffin
You know you've made the right choice when your chocolate meltdown comes bubbling and oozing with hot chocolate.
Their desserts are not too sweet and leaves quite a nice after taste. ;)
Assorted pastries and cakes =)
They also serve scones ($7.50 for two scones with jam and a pot of earl grey). I also overheard an elderly couple complimenting their milkshake (the milkshakes comes in the following flavours chocolate, banana, vanilla, strawberry, etc)
The inflight vegetarain meal - western, was of a different taste from the Indian meal which was just as tasty. Should venture to try out different types of vegetarian meals that are being offered by MAS
Hungry and looking for vegetarian food in a shopping mall without a vegetarian restaurant is not difficult if you care to enquire from the different restaurants if they can cater to your special needs. Other than the few vegetarian dishes that were on the menu, they could even make a vegetarian roll for us on special request.
