Organic Recipe
Lucky I had made reservation for a table two days before our get together with some friends as the place was all packed without a vacant table. We quickly placed our orders and then sat back to do our catching up as all of us had not met for sometime. We were all quite hungry and was glad that the food arrived very fast. I am happy that my friends, who are all not vegetarians, had trusted me with my choices of dishes and found the food to be interesting and delicious. Afterall this is my fifth visit and I am definitely coming back for more and hope to recommend it to more people.

Cendol, Arena Foodcourt, Sunway Pyramid
My friends and me are crazy for good cendol and thus far we find that the nyonya cendol in Malacca is the best and has been around quite a number of stalls in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya trying to look for something close in comparison. The vote is unanimous when we tried this cendol stall in the Food Junction on the basement floor of Jaya Jusco in Sunway Pyramid. Not only is it cheap, the taste is almost as good as that found in Malacca. The standard cendol is RM2.80 and for RM3.30 you get a big tablespoonful of springy pearls.

Mushroom Culture
We arrived very early at the restaurant anticipating a huge crowd as the last time when we were here, it was fully occupied and we could not find any vacant table. As many people will be on a vegetarian diet for the first nine days in the ninth lunar month and many vegetarian restaurants will be crowded so we thought we better arrive early (before 12 noon) as the last time when we were here, the restaurant was so full that we could not find a vacant table to occupy. We were surprised that the restaurant was empty today so we quickly placed our orders and the food arrived very fast which is good as we were all very hungry. Monkey head mushrooms in red soup is still our favorite and I strongly recommend this dish.

E Life Restaurant
I find it is very clean inside this restaurant. Checked out the dishes today and they are rather appealing. Brown rice with 3 dishes was RM2.80. Soup of the day was lotus root with ground nuts. The chef, Alex, is a myanmarese. He was really enthusiastic to inform us that all the dishes were cooked by him and wanted us to try them out and let him know how if we liked them. So my frank opionion was that they were very delicious. Price was reasonable and serving was very generous.

Sweet Garden
I am so sad to see the notice on the entrance door of the restaurant informing that they will be shifting to a new place from 11th November, 2009. This present place is so convenient to visit and with easy and free parking, it is such a pity that they will have to give it up. I really like the cooking style of their chef as it totally suits my taste, which is less oil and less salt. Will definitely go and visit them more often when they move to their new place.

Durians - Queen Street, Singapore
I guess Singaporeans are just as crazy about durians as us Malaysians going by the number of durian stalls all around town. I saw this big crowd of people and was wondering what could be attracting their attention, so I made my way to the front and found that they were all actually crowding around to look at durians been opened by the stall owner. Every time a new one is opened and exposing the fleshy fruits, exclamations and good remarks will be heard from among some people in the crowd. It was quite difficult to resist so we bought a packet of
"King Sultan" for $12.00. The taste is very ordinary and I find it quite expensive for 7 seeds.

Fo You Yuan Vegetarian Restaurant - Singapore
Our Singaporean friends recommended this restaurant and we are pleased with the food and the service. One of the partners Mr Tommy Tsau was there to recommend a few of their specialties. The sugarcane flower is something special as not many restaurants offer this dish and the combination of it with mushrooms and capsicum made the dish really delicious. Oyster & Fish was good too as the mushrooms were prepared to be like oysters and cooked together with fish and serai was so tasty.

Homemade Radish Cake

It's always a pleasure to make things from scratch, as you would definitely enjoy them even more than the store bought ones. This post features my latest attempt, vegetarian radish cakes. =) Definitely a heavenly treat, especially when accompanied by Lingham's chilli sauce. Yum.

*Makes 6 pieces

Ingredients:

A)
100 ml water
300 g fresh radish (grated)

B)
200g rice flour
330 ml water
1/2 tablespoon pepper
3/4 tablespoon sugar
1/2 tablespoon salt
handful of dried shitake mushroom (soaked overnight, drained, pan fried)

C)
Fresh Red Chilli for garnishing
*Option: dried shallots

Method:
1) Put A in a pan and cook for 10-15 minutes until radish softens and water has dried up.
2) Put the premixed B into the pan.
3) Prepare the steamer (I used a wok)
4) Stir continuosly for about 3 minutes or until the mixture turns into a thick paste.
5) Empty into a square plate (patting the paste down to about 2 cm in height).
6) Steam for 30 minutes.
7) Allow to cool completely before cutting into square blocks
8) You can either serve them now or you can proceed further by pan frying them for a crispier skin.
9) Top with C and serve!

Jui Kueh - Bedok Interchange, S'pore
After the vegetarian rice dish, we walked around the whole food court to check if there are other vegetarian dishes we can get to try and found these little bowls of white rice cakes which Singaporeans call as 'jui kueh'. Topped with chopped raddish gravy, it becomes such a tasty and delicious light snack. They are priced at $1.00 for 4 pieces.

The Loaf - Pavilion
Went shopping with friends from overseas and wanted to rest our poor feet after a few hours of walking around at Pavilion. Our friends had heard so much about a Japanese style bakery owned by Tun Dr. Mahathir and wanted to try it out. They must be having something like more than 50 types of breads so there is really no problem for vegetarians like us to make our individual choices. We are happy that our friends found that the bread are of good quality and the coffee is strong and satisfying.

Bitter gourd with black bean sauce

Bitter gourds are very low in calories but dense with precious nutrients. It is an excellent source of vitamins B1, B2, and B3, C, magnesium, folic acid, zinc, phosphorus, manganese, and has high dietary fiber. It is rich in iron, contains twice the beta-carotene of broccoli, twice the calcium of spinach, and twice the potassium of a banana.

Bitter gourd contains a unique phyto-constituent that has been confirmed to have a hypoglycemic effect called charantin. There is also another insulin-like compound known as polypeptide P which have been suggested as insulin replacement in some diabetic patients.

Here is a home recipe for bitter gourd where we can consume it regularly with rice.

Ingredients:
1 medium sized bitter gourd - cut into slices
1 tsp ginger strips
1 tbsp black beans
Some olive oil
Method:
1. Fry ginger strips in some olive oil
2. Add in bitter gourd slices and fry for 2 minutes
3. Add a little water and simmer for another minute
4. Lastly add in black beans.
5. Simmer for a little while and dish out to serve.

MG's Cafe - Sambal Belacan
This pre-packed sambal belacan is made by MG's themselves and the taste is simply delicious. I find the belacan is a bit dry, so I added two tablespoon of water to it and heated it up in a non stick pan. So there is a little gravy and it is just perfect to go with your santan rice if you are making your own nasi lemak. You will definitely go back for more.

Madras Lane Rice Noodles
When vegetarian food is not not to be found, it is always a safe bet if you can find a shop/stall selling rice rice noodles (chee cheong fun) as most of the time you can request for a vegetarian version of it. Shitake mushrooms with basil leaves

Most mushrooms are rich in protein, fiber, B and C vitamins and calcium and also some other minerals. Shitake mushrooms along with maitake and reishi mushrooms are considered as medicinal mushrooms and have shown to boost heart health, lower the risk of cancer, promote immune function, ward off viruses, bacteria and fungi, reduce inflammation, combat allergies, help balance blood sugar levels and support the body's detoxification mechanisms. There are so many ways to consume these mushrooms. Most people add mushrooms to salads but I like shitake mushrooms cooked with basil leaves from my own garden.

Ingredients:
1 packet shitake mushrooms
A bunch of basil leaves
A little olive oil
A little ginger strips
A little oyster sauce for taste
Method:
1. Fry ginger in a little olive oil
2. Add in shitake mushrooms and fry for 2 minutes.
3. Add a little water and simmer for one minute
4. Lastly add in basil leaves and a little oyster sauce and off the flame.
5. Serve immediately.

Chikuyo - The Curve

Heard that Chikuyo had opened a branch in The Curve and had wanted to try it out. Am quite disappointed with the order I made today which is the tomyam meehoon. The taste is quite ok, but was really not happy with the quantity that was served. There was just like three spoonfuls of the meehoon that I could get and I think it did not even fill a quarter of my stomach. Mayebe will try out rice dishes next time.
