Best Thai Pineapple Fried Rice Ever - only at Yishensu, 1Utama
As you may or may not know, One Utama's old wing is nearing the end of its facelift and is expected to reopen to shoppers soon, with some shops already upgraded and resumed operations. I do not know the exact reopening date, but if you are thinking to visit and get a sneak preview of what's coming but is having trouble finding the motivation to do so, worry not, as here's a good reason for you to visit this very weekend!
Yishensu, the vegetarian connoisseur, serves the BEST pineapple fried rice in town. Do opt for the "special" as you get extra toppings like macadamias, cashews, raisins, mock fish flakes from the ordinary version. It has a "curry" and tangy kick to it, making it a very appetising meal indeed.
Emperor Tofu (RM 16)
I liked the presentation of this dish and it was a perfect dish to go with steaming hot white rice
Fried Oat Prawn (RM 18)
I loved the generous serving of crunchy oats that coated the spongy mock prawn. I don't really fancy mock prawns a lot, and would actually prefer if they used something else instead, like something tofu based.
Then there is the not-so-special Char Kway Teow. I have to admit, nothing beats the Char Kway Teow served at Blue Boy Mansion. Read it here Blue Boy Mansion

MG's Cafe Takeaway - one of the best grab and go service!
For working Malaysians, our busy and hectic lifestyle tends to eat into our lunch time, making it seem impossible to sit and dine in a proper restaurant. I tend not to mix my lunch time with my work, but I had to succumb to the negative forces that took away my lunch privilege. So, I decided to go for MG Cafe's takeaway as I really like the love put into their takeaway meals. You really have to try it once to really get what I mean!
Sambal Onigiri - perfect grab and go that's readily available at the counter
Tiramisu - made with yoghurt, cream cheese, coffee, etc
Rendang donburi - looks like something from a japanese restaurant isn't it?
The best would be the assam laksa. You would never think of taking away a soup-based noodle from a restaurant, but MG makes it a perfect takeaway. They generously seperate the noodle from the soup using two paper bowls. I really like this concept as it is never a good idea to put boiling hot soup into a plastic bag, depending on its quality and whether it is able to withstand the heat. MG eliminates all my worries!
A yummy meal indeed!!! This is where I start craving for my 2nd bowl but the unfortunate thing about takeaways is that you can never have seconds unless you plan ahead!

Delicious (1 Utama) + Paddington House of Pancakes
1 Utama has been our regular hangout coz of the manageable crowds on weekends. Apart from Yishensu, I must say that 1 Utama does not really have a lot of choices for vegetarians. However, I am thankful that delicious has a branch in 1 Utama as it has a very vegetarian friendly menu. Never again I have to decide whether to trust the waiter when he nods his head when I ask if the item on the menu is indeed vegetarian.
One of my favourite item on delicious' menu - the trio of dips
The lebanese bread was baked to perfection and went really well with the three dips. I particularly like the green dip as it has a very tangy herb kick to it.
I totally love the pinenuts on this grilled mushroom salad. However, priced at over RM20 (excluding service tax of 10% and government tax of 6%), it is a little pricey.
The good thing about dining in malls is because of the possibility of going on a "restaurant crawl" right after a meal.
So, we left Delicious to hunt for some dessert after our main meal and finally decided to go with Paddington House of Pancakes.
Paddington House of Pancakes have revised the prices on the menu but I am pleased to say that they have maintained the portion and goodies that come with their pancakes :)
Oh my god, this has got to be the most sinful but most satisfying dessert ever!
Presenting to you the chocolate peanut butter roll, which looks very "innocent" on the outside...
but look what is hidden in the inside! Check out the oozing melted chocolate mixed with very tasty and chunky peanut butter! You have so got to try this!!!!! However, not all pancakes served at Paddington's is as satisfying as the one mentioned above as we did not find the option below (pancakes topped with mango puree) to be overly sweet. It would have been much better if they replaced the cream with vanilla ice-cream instead.

Guinness Ice Cream -- The Gruesome Truth Revealed --
Guinness is a popular Irish dry stout that originated in the brewery of Arthur Guinness (1725–1803) at St. James's Gate, Dublin.
Made from water, barley, hops and brewer's yeast, the famous drink is then treated with isinglass finings (fishes' air bladders) before the finished product ends up before the consumer. I am truly shocked as I DID NOT know the gruesome truth before I tried what I am about to post below. I REALLY CANNOT BELIEVE researching about the background and history of Guinness for this post actually made me aware that there are fish organs used in the production of Guinness Stout!
Looks like this post won't be vegetarian, but hopefully by reading this, vegetarians, vegans and those that never knew can be warned and made aware before they choose to order a glass of Guinness Stout or food that contains Guinness like the ice-cream at 'The Bee' in Jaya One.
By now, apart from feeling disgusted and cheated, I do not know what else to say about my experience. I guess the moral of the story is, never take for granted, especially when it comes to processed food, since you never know what is actually used to produce the product that ends up before you. According to wikipedia, "In the absence of "animal products used here" labels, vegetarians may be unaware that the processing of a commercially produced beverage may have utilized animal based finings: either gelatin, casein, albumen, or isinglass." Anyone else out there knows of some hidden secret that vegetarians and vegans should know about?
Udonlicious @ Marufuku, Jaya One - one of the few places that serves freshly made udons
Marufuku is a modern Japanese eatery with self-service expected during busier hours. According to Marufuku, they are the first and only eatery that serves fresh udon in Malaysia. Serving only locally handmade udon, Marufuku offers really tasty and good value Japanese food. Starting from RM6, Marufuku has got to be one of the best places to savor Japanese Udon.
Unfortunately, the only option when it comes to mains, vegetarian only the Salada Udon (RM8) to choose from. However, it is very unique as the udon, topped with julienne carrots, cucumbers, tofu, egg and spring onions, is served cold and drizzled with a very fragrant sesame sauce. The sesame sauce was so fragrant that I am actually craving for more when I am writing this!
Another must-try is the Blood Orange Sorbet Yes, it is actually served in the "remains" of the real fruit!

Splendid Spread and Tempting Treats at Sushi Tei, Malaysia
There's something addictive about Japanese food that keeps me craving for more. I think it's the simplicity that makes Japanese food taste so good.
Veggie Tempura Bento Deep fried vegetable tempura served on a box of steaming hot Japanese rice. Make sure you as for some daikon (Japanese sushi) to be put in the soy sauce for dipping the tempura :) Kanpyo maki and Oshinko maki I love it how the sushi at sushi tei is made up of more filling than rice. Yum. Check out how much pickled gourd and picked daikon (white radish) were used in this dish!
Edamame I noticed that every "branch" had exactly two edamame attached to it. Is it really the case or is it a japanese tradition to serve only two edamame with each stick? haha
Tamago maki Egg filled sushi. :)
Kappa maki I believe this is rather unique as the chef added a generous amount of sesame to this dish. The fragrance of the sesame seeds was a perfect compliment to the crunchy cucumber which is refreshingly satisfying.
There are 3 sushi teis in town. 1) Tropicana City Mall (Petaling Jaya) 2) Pavilion Kuala Lumpur 3) The Gardens Mall, Mid-valley City
Yum Yum. Am back to post more goodies found at Chef Low. Not only are the food organic, the white theme of the restaurant gives a very elegant ambience. Perhaps the management can consider to play some nature sounds like birds chirping in the park, that way it would really feel as if we're attending the Queen's garden party in Buckingham Palace.
Nyonya Dumpling
I simply love the filing as it is very tasty and flavorful. Thankfully it is not too spicy! :)
Fragrant 'Snail' Mushrooms
This is my FAVE dish at Chef Low. You must try this dish if you visit Chef Low. Mushrooms are deep fried to perfection and is packed full of flavor, something that is perfect to go with rice. There's nothing more you can ask for.
Herbal Mix - I like the fact that I do not feel thirsty after a meal at Chef Low, so I can comfortably help myself to the "soup" or gravy without having to worry about the MSG effect afterwards. Raw mango salad topped with peanuts and chili flakes. Perfect as a palette cleanser.
This post is about a Malaysian dish. A very classic one that every Malaysian will crave for every once in awhile (if not everyday). But where's the best place to have it?
If we're at shopping malls, and when we choose to dine at Madam Kwan's / Little Penang Cafe, we normally go for their Char Kway Teow as this dish is easily customizable to suit vegetarians. Since hawker centers are not accessible in malls, who serves better Char Kway Teow? I would think Madam Kwan's as the Char Kway Teow is of bigger portion (though it's more expensive) and is less oily. The Char Kway Teow at Madam Kwan's is also drier, which means it has more Wok Hei (锅气).
Madam Kwan's CKT
Little Penang Cafe's CKT
Nevertheless, nothing beats the Char Kway Teow at Blue Boy Mansion. Even my non-vegetarian friends thinks it's the best CKT they have ever had! Read about the best place for vegetarian Char Kway Teow here, a sweet spot that's smack right in the middle of KL! If you have not tried it, you should. Enuf said!
A huge plate for only RM 4
The Chef at work :) Yes, he's an Indian that mastered the art of Char Kway Teow!
With our busy schedules, sometimes we have no choice but to settle for something quick and easy, that is grabbing a 饭盒 faan harp (takeaway) and rush off to have it elsewhere. If you're around PJ State, there's a vegetarian stall that offers a great variety of dishes to choose from. We are quite happy with the food as the food is within our "Low Salt/Little Oil/No MSG" standards. One thing I love about this stall is that the cook keeps replenishing green vegetables, so you won't have to worry about not being able to get your vegetable fix for the day. Green is GOOD!
Another meal at my favourite restaurant, Kuan Yin Chai
Kuan Yin is and still is my favorite vegetarian restaurant in Malaysia. I feel very much at home when dining at this eatery as I always felt relaxed and contented after each meal as I had never experienced the sinking feeling that I would have a MSG-overdose.
"Suckling Pig" with Mantou I was reluctant to order this as I never liked "mock-meat" that was made from glutton but ordered it anyway since my guest at the table was very interested to try it. I must say, though, the "Suckling Pig" at Kuan Yin is one of the best I've tried so far. It was "barbecued" to perfection and its crisp honey outer complimented the Mantous very well.
Enoki Mushroom Tempura Salad This is a very refreshing dish, and the fresh and raw salad platter went really well with the tempura enoki mushrooms.
Steamed Yam with Ham The chef at Kuan Yin is so super duper talented! I absolutely love this dish as the chewy ham slices adds the extra oomph to the steamed yam.
Kangkung Belacan Another favorite of mine. Somehow, everything at Kuan Yin fits my taste and needs. Never too oily, never too salty, never too spicy, never too bland, just like this simple yet hard to make dish. I tried making my own with the vegetarian "belacan" I bought from Yolek, a vegetarian mart in OUG, but failed miserably as I never managed to control the 'wetness' of the belacan.

It has been awhile since I last visited Kechara Oasis. Although it is conveniently located with ample parking available, we were never attracted to make a forth visit as we did not enjoy the food and service during our last visit. However, since I was meeting a fellow vegetarian friend at Jaya One, I decided to give it another try as I was very tempted to try their round Tibetan dumplings that I read on the internet. I am pleased to inform that the food and service has improved tremendously! Kudos to the management for stepping up to make the dining experience a very pleasurable and memorable one. I will definitely be back for more.
Complimentary Lemongrass and Ginger tea.
Complimentary Appetizer Cucumber and Carrot Sticks dipped in a very fragrant wasabi/mustard based sauce
Amdo Yak Beef The sauce goes extremely well with the delicious bun. It's very appetizing as it is a little spicy and chewy.
The paus that look like little dome temples. :) oh, did I mention that these taste very heavenly? They were so soft and fresh, just like cotton candy!
Great combination! We did not even ask for rice as the pau filled our tummy to the max.
Momo (round dumplings) and a variety of vegetables and mushrooms soaked in a very tasty broth
I love the momo. There is a distinctive and pleasant taste with every bite. It would be a perfect Momo if the stuffings were a little more juicy.
Cozy and elegant deco sets the mood for perfect fine dining.

It is always a pleasure to dine at Chef Low as we always expect sumptuous food and efficient service. I was told that the management is looking into introducing a new menu soon. I was torn with the decision as I do have a few favorites on the old menu that I wouldn't want to be taken off, however, I must admit, I am running out of new things to try and the management has chosen a right time to initiate the change. Meanwhile, do check out this eatery before the new menu is rolled out!
Fruit Tea RM9.90 for a whole potful of fruit tea. I particularly like the refreshing and soothing feeling after each sip. This is a very good and healthy option for family with kids as they will definitely love this!
Curry Vegetables A great dish if you are in for all natural veggies to go with a bowl of warm rice.
Black Pepper Udon Yum, I cannot describe how fantastic the combination of black pepper and udon is! The person that thought of the combination is a pure genius in culinary arts!
A very satisfying bowl of almond jelly with mango puree. The freshly cut apples added a crunchy edge to this delicious dessert.
