Vegetarianism on the rise as people become aware of health and environmental rationale for eating less meat
By Jessica Lim @
Straits TimesA vegetarian? 'Oh, are you a Buddhist or a Hindu?' That was a typical exchange in the 1990s when Dr George Jacobs, 59, president of the Vegetarian Society, told people he was vegetarian.
But that mindset is slowly changing, he said.
'More people have become aware of the health and environmental rationale for eating less or no meat,' said the university lecturer.
The questions he now gets are different too. 'Times have changed. Today's vegetarianism is not our parents' vegetarianism.'
